What is an affiliate program?

An affiliate program lets other people - bloggers, influencers, other businesses, or loyal customers - earn a commission every time they send you a paying customer. You provide the tracking link or coupon code; they do the marketing; you pay only when a real sale happens.

Done well, it's the most capital-efficient growth channel in digital marketing. You never pay for impressions, clicks, or leads - only for revenue already in your account.

You provide the link

Every affiliate gets a unique tracking URL or coupon code. HeldSway generates these automatically on onboarding.

They do the marketing

Your partners promote your product to their audiences - content, email, social, or word of mouth.

You pay for results only

Commission triggers only when a referred customer completes a purchase. Not clicks - revenue.

Is an affiliate program right for your business?

Affiliate programs work best when at least two of the following are true:

  • Your margin supports a payout. If gross margin is above 30-40%, paying 10-20% commission on referred revenue is almost always ROI-positive.
  • You have an audience of potential partners. Past customers, newsletter subscribers, niche bloggers, or creators in your space are natural starting points.
  • Your product has a clear, describable benefit. Affiliates need to explain why to buy. If you struggle to articulate the value, partners will too.
  • You can commit at least 2-3 hours per month. Programs that stall usually do so because no one owns them. HeldSway automates tracking and payouts - but recruiting still needs a human.

Set a commission structure your affiliates will get excited about.

Commission structure is the single biggest lever in affiliate recruitment. Get it wrong and the best partners ignore your program; get it right and they promote you before the competition.

Flat

Flat commission

A fixed dollar amount per sale. Predictable for your budget; easy for affiliates to understand. Best for high-AOV products where percentages feel underwhelming.

%

Percentage commission

A percentage of the order value. Scales naturally; rewards affiliates who send high-value customers. The standard for e-commerce and SaaS.

Recurring commission

For subscriptions, the affiliate earns a cut of every renewal. This attracts serious content creators who play the long game.

Performance tiers

Commission rate auto-increases once an affiliate hits a monthly volume milestone. Turns your top performers into loyal advocates.

Rule of thumb: Start with 10-20% for e-commerce, 20-30% for SaaS (first-year revenue), or a flat dollar amount representing about 15-20% of your average order value. You can always adjust - HeldSway lets you update rules without touching a line of code.

Tracking that works in the real world - not just the lab.

Most early affiliate programs undercount conversions by 20-40%. Safari ITP strips third-party cookies, ad blockers kill pixel fires, and influencer coupon codes never get credited because there is no link.

  • Link trackingEvery affiliate gets a unique URL (for example, yourdomain.com?ref=sarah). HeldSway mints these automatically on onboarding.
  • Coupon codesFor podcasts and influencer channels where the CTA is verbal (use code SARAH10), coupon tracking closes the gap that link tracking cannot.
  • First-party trackingHeldSway's single snippet records conversions server-side - resistant to ad blockers and browser privacy restrictions from day one.
  • Cross-device attributionClick on mobile, buy on desktop three days later. First-party, cookieless tracking bridges that gap so affiliates get the credit they earned.

Give affiliates a home that looks like yours, not ours.

Your affiliate portal is the first impression every partner gets. A generic, unbranded page signals side project. A clean portal on your own domain - with your logo, your colors, your brand - signals a professional program.

With HeldSway, every plan ships with a customizable portal. On Basic and above, affiliates log in at a domain you own, see live stats, download links, coupon codes, and access creative assets.

Before you launch, prepare: A welcome message · Commission overview and payout schedule · 3-5 banner sizes · Product photography · An affiliate FAQ

Your best affiliates are already in your orbit.

The most common mistake is posting to an affiliate network and waiting. The highest-quality early partners are almost always people who already know and use your product.

01

Your customer list

Personally invite your top 10-20 customers sorted by order value. They are already advocates; they just need a link. Conversion rate typically runs 20-40%.

02

Your newsletter

A single announcement surfaces creators, bloggers, and marketers already engaged with your brand.

03

Micro-influencers in your niche

Accounts with 5K-50K followers who serve exactly your audience often outperform mega-influencers because their audience trusts them.

04

Complementary business owners

If you sell yoga equipment, a yoga teacher platform is a natural partner. Approach it as a mutual arrangement, not a cold pitch.

Fraud is a silent line item. Catch it before it compounds.

Most small programs don't discover affiliate fraud until a payout cycle later. By then, fake conversions or self-referral loops have already cost real money.

  • Self-referralsAn affiliate uses their own link to buy, collects commission, then returns the product. HeldSway's IP and duplicate detection flags these automatically.
  • Cookie stuffingThird parties inject tracking cookies without a real click. HeldSway's click validation catches suspiciously fast conversion times and anomalous patterns.
  • Coupon code leakageAffiliate codes shared on coupon aggregator sites inflate one affiliate's numbers. Restrict code visibility and set usage limits per affiliate.

Best practice: Enable fraud filters on day one, set a 7-14 day attribution window for e-commerce, and review your top-earning affiliates quarterly.

Pay affiliates on time, every time.

Late or incorrect payouts are the fastest way to lose a good affiliate. Set a schedule before launch, communicate it on the portal, and stick to it.

Best practice: Set a minimum payout threshold of $50-$100. Communicate it clearly on your portal so affiliates know when to expect payment.

The numbers that tell you if your program is working.

Clicks and conversions are a start, but the metrics that determine whether your program is worth scaling are a level deeper.

Earnings Per Click (EPC)

Average revenue per link click. Affiliates use this to prioritize programs. Target: above $0.50; above $1.00 to attract quality creators.

Revenue per Affiliate

Identify your top 20% driving disproportionate revenue. Invest time in them - custom creatives, higher tiers, direct contact.

Customer LTV by source

Which affiliates bring loyal customers? HeldSway's per-affiliate LTV and churn reporting answers this on Standard and Custom plans.

30/60/90-day cadence: At 30 days, verify tracking. At 60, contact inactive affiliates. At 90, review commission structure vs. margin and adjust.
